Throughout our history, the Climate Institute and its partners have engaged in significant work, including:

• 1986 – The Climate Institute was founded as the first organization in the world focused solely on climate change.
• 1987 – Organized the Washington Conference on Preparing for Climate Change, the first climate change conference in North America.
• 1988 – Held the first climate change symposium for United Nations Missions and Agencies, spurring international interest and leading to the creation of the IPCC.
• 1989 – Convened a Conference on Global Change and the Arctic.
• 1989 – Held the Cairo World Conference on Climate Change, the first major climate conference in the Middle East.
• 1990s – Played a key role in the work of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), including editing and co-authoring large portions of the First Assessment Report and Update.
• 1991 – Joined with the Japan Environment Agency to organize the First Asia Pacific Seminar on Climate Change in Nagoya, Japan.
• 1992 – Helped prepare the groundwork for the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC), which was agreed to by nations of the world in Rio de Janeiro.
• 1992 – Sponsored a Conference on Cities at the Royal Geographic Society in London.
• 1992 – Published one of the first climate refugee reports.
• 1995 – Coordinated studies on the impact of climate change in Asia, including work with President Ramos of the Philippines to organize the Manila Asia Pacific Leaders Summit on Climate Change.
• 2007 – Climate Institute leaders Topping, McCracken, and Moore wrote the book Sudden and Disruptive Climate Change: Exploring the Real Risks and How We Can Avoid Them.

• 2000s – Conducted research on increasing agricultural productivity and sequestering carbon;
• 2012 – Launched a Global Coalition for Sustainable Energy Islands at the Rio+20 Conference.
• 2016 – Established Earth Science Gallery at the Children’s Museum, Dubai as the 18th Climate Education Center.
• 2019 – Developed the blueprint for the North American Supergrid, a high-voltage, direct-current electricity grid.
• 2022 – Launched and served as the Secretariat for the Global Ocean Energy Alliance.
